Chair of the JSNDI Research & Technical Committee on Acoustic Emission and Acoustic Technologies

Institute of Science Tokyo, Japan

In June 2026, I succeeded Professor Hirokazu Moriya of Tohoku University as Chair of the AE and Acoustic Technologies Division of the Japanese Society for Non-Destructive Inspection (JSNDI). It is my great pleasure that IAES-28, the 28th International Acoustic Emission Symposium, will be held in Kobe.

IAES is a long-established international symposium that brings together researchers, engineers, and students in the field of acoustic emission (AE) from Japan and around the world. Over the years, it has provided a valuable forum for presenting and discussing research findings and practical technologies, while fostering lasting professional and personal relationships among its participants.

IAES-28 will be held as part of NDT NEXT 2027, a major international event jointly organized by the Asia Pacific Federation for Non Destructive Testing (APFNDT) and JSNDI. The event will bring together not only specialists in AE and acoustics, but also researchers, engineers, and industry professionals involved in a wide range of nondestructive testing and evaluation technologies. Experts in standards and codes, certification, education, and professional training, as well as those engaged in research, development, and practical applications, are expected to attend from around the world.

A major exhibition on nondestructive testing will also be held at the international exhibition hall adjacent to the conference venue. This will provide an excellent opportunity to see the latest inspection equipment and related technologies firsthand, and to learn about current technological developments and the needs of industry. For IAES participants, it will also offer opportunities to establish new collaborations and explore research possibilities beyond the traditional boundaries of AE.

At the same time, we intend to preserve the friendly and welcoming atmosphere that has always been one of the defining features of IAES, where participants can interact closely and engage in open and candid discussions. In addition to the official NDT NEXT events, we are planning the traditional IAES Banquet for IAES participants. We hope that it will provide a characteristically IAES occasion for reuniting with long-standing colleagues in the AE community and for fostering interaction across generations and national borders.

Following the reorganization of the academic divisions within JSNDI in 2026, the former AE Division began its activities under the new name of the AE and Acoustics Division. While continuing to build upon the knowledge and technologies developed in the field of AE, we are expanding our scope to encompass a broader range of research and technologies related to acoustics. We are also working to encourage researchers and engineers from new fields to participate in our activities. We hope that IAES-28 will symbolize an important new step in this development.

Kobe, the host city, is an international port city surrounded by the sea and mountains. It is known for its open waterfront scenery, distinctive international character, and popularity among visitors from around the world. In addition to the scientific and technical exchange at the symposium, we hope that you will enjoy the city, culture, and cuisine of Kobe. We warmly invite researchers and engineers in AE and acoustics, those who have not previously attended IAES, and students and early-career researchers who will lead the next generation to join us in Kobe.

We look forward to welcoming participants from around the world and sharing with you an occasion for lively discussion and warm interaction.

Accommodation

Participants are responsible for arranging and paying for their own accommodation. The organizers have not reserved hotel rooms or appointed an official conference hotel.

Accommodation may be booked directly through hotel websites or through online booking platforms such as Booking.com. Room rates and availability vary depending on the booking date, room type, and cancellation conditions. Rates are often more favorable when reservations are made well in advance, and conveniently located hotels may become fully booked as the conference approaches. We therefore strongly recommend booking your accommodation as early as possible.

For participants who are unfamiliar with Kobe, the following two areas are particularly convenient.

Please note

The hotels listed below are provided only as examples of conveniently located accommodation. They are not officially designated, reserved, or endorsed by the organizers. Participants should carefully check the hotel location, room rates, availability, cancellation policy, and other booking conditions before making a reservation.

Dining, shopping, and sightseeing

Sannomiya Area

Sannomiya is Kobe’s main city center and transportation hub. It offers a wide variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, department stores, convenience stores, and other shops. It is also a convenient base for sightseeing in Kobe and for travel to other destinations in the Kansai region.

The conference venue at Shimin Hiroba Station can be reached from Sannomiya Station in approximately 10 minutes by Port Liner. Participants staying in Sannomiya will need to travel to and from the venue each day, but they will have a much wider choice of restaurants, shops, and evening activities than on Port Island.

When selecting a hotel in this area, we recommend choosing one within easy walking distance of Port Liner Sannomiya Station.

Examples of conveniently located hotels

  • THE ORIENTAn upscale hotel in Kobe’s historic former foreign settlement, suitable for participants seeking a more luxurious stay.
  • remm plus Kobe SannomiyaA modern hotel in an exceptionally convenient location in the Sannomiya station area.
  • Kobe Sannomiya Tokyu REI HotelA convenient mid-range hotel close to Sannomiya Station.
  • Hotel Villa Fontaine Kobe SannomiyaA comfortable mid-range hotel with convenient access to Sannomiya Station and the Port Liner.

Easiest access to the venue

Port Island Area

Port Island is the convention district where the conference venue is located. Staying in this area provides the shortest and simplest journey to the conference, and some hotels are within walking distance of the venue.

Port Island is quieter than Sannomiya. Hotel restaurants, convenience stores, and a limited number of other facilities are available, but the range of restaurants, shops, and evening activities is more limited than in central Kobe.

This area is recommended for participants who place the highest priority on convenient access to the conference venue.

Examples of conveniently located hotels

  • Kobe Portopia HotelAn upscale full-service hotel located immediately adjacent to the conference facilities.
  • Ariston Hotel KobeA conveniently located hotel within easy reach of the conference venue.
  • Hotel Pearl City KobeA practical accommodation option with convenient access to the convention district.

Which Area Should You Choose?

Choose Sannomiya if you prefer:

  • A wide variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops
  • Convenient access to sightseeing and transportation
  • More options for dining and social activities after the conference
  • A wider range of hotel styles and price levels

Choose Port Island if you prefer:

  • The shortest and simplest access to the conference venue
  • A quieter environment
  • Less travel before and after the conference sessions
  • Accommodation within or close to the convention district

Important Notes

Please note that Sannomiya Station, Shin-Kobe Station, and Kobe Station are different stations.

The Port Liner for Shimin Hiroba Station and the conference venue departs from Sannomiya Station. When booking accommodation, please check the exact location of the hotel and its access to Port Liner Sannomiya Station.

All hotel reservations must be made individually by participants. The organizers are unable to make reservations, guarantee room availability or room rates, or handle changes and cancellations on behalf of participants.
